By tradition, in Italy the Christmas tree goes up on the 8th of December, and with it all the rest of the decorations. In Ireland, instead, is the last weekend of November.
If the Italian tradition has its origins in the celebration of the “Madonna dell’Assunta”; the Irish one, has it instead in “The late late toy show”.
I know what you are thinking: how is it possible that the ultra catholic Ireland, set the start of the Christmas time over a TV show? Well, may be originally there was a religious connection too, but that was certainly well before this country became obsessed with the above show that, by the way, religiously goes live every year on the last Friday of November since the TV entered the Irish homes.
The non Irish, would probably wonder what the show is about. Well, in simple terms, it is four hours of kids showing their favourite toys to other kids to add them to their Santa’s list. And while the kids get all excited over the new toys, the parents spend instead those four hours thinking about substitutes for those toys their kids will never get because sold out; and all this while trying to convince themselves that there is nothing wrong watching a grown man (the presenter) in full Christmas outfit surrounded by young kids looking like a pedofile in a playground.
I have never really got the Irish obsession for the show, that I personally find obnoxious. As for the Christmas decoration, I placed myself in between and normally go for the 1st of December, following my own tradition, (that is probably also a well spread worldwide tradition, I did not initiate anything new here.).
That said, this year the Christmas mood arrived earlier and I decide to mess up the traditions . No, don’t worry, we will not watch “The late late toy show”, we did it once and we are still traumatised by the experience. I simply decided to put up those Christmas decorations well in advance. Six weeks in advance, following the Love Actually(myself and the traveling husband Christmas movie) timeframe.
All excited about my plan, I tell the girls.
“And why?” Daughter number one asks.
“Because this year I feel festive already!” I replied enthusiastically merry.
“Fair enough! Good for you!” She replies with that level zero enthusiasm that she had inherited from her father.
“Mmm, mama, but you did realise that there is already less than four weeks left before Christmas right?” Says daughter number two who, had instead inherited her father’s mathematical brain.
And just like that, those predominant and prepotent genes that the traveling husband passed on to our offspring had spoiled my Love Actually early Christmas.
Spoiled but not ruined though, because it takes far more to break my jolly side and make it succumb to my genetically unenthusiastically family!
And so here I am, on the 29th of November, feeling all merry and bright while looking at my fully decorated home, three weeks and five days before Christmas.
I know it’s well far away from those six weeks I was originally going for, but still earlier than the traditional three weeks and three days.
Have a great week you all, full of jolly and merry moments and don’t forget to always look at the bright side of things!
